Little Farm in the Ozarks (Little House, The Rocky Ridge Years)

Enjoyed this book
I personally am liking these stories they are so interesting. One thing I see in all of the stories is that Rose was a little work horse. She had more responsibilities than a lot of adults. I feel she was probably ready to be out on her own so she could rest! But the books aren't boring.

Children and adults love the book
Although the writing style is definitely different than Laura Ingalls Wilder, the book about Laura, Almanzo, and Rose is captivating for old (me) and young (my grandchildren (7 to 14) alike. Descriptive enough to "picture" the story based on the late 1800 to early 1900s lifestyle and true experiences (memories)of the family in Missouri. Moves right along from one episode to the next so that reader or listener never loses interest . Mama (Laura "Bess"), Papa (Almanzo "Manly"), and Rose become as beloved characters as all the Ingalls family in the original Little House on the Prairie series. I'm definitely happy to have found The Rose Years sequels. I purchased this book and others in the sequel series as used paperback copies and each have been good copies worth keeping.

My Favorite
This is my favorite book in the Rose Years series. It reflects a simple but happy life on a farm. Rose enjoys a friendship with a neighbor girl named Alva. Rose thinks Alva is lucky because Alva doesn't have near the chores that Rose does. One point I believe needs some clarification: Almanzo in real life was disabled. Rose wrote somewhere that her father was an invalid following his stroke in De Smet. Other accounts say he shuffled and leaned on a cane the rest of his life and was never as strong as he once was. That would account for so much(actually too much) work falling on Rose at the age of seven or eight. But in the series the author doesn't write the story reflecting Almanzo handicapped. He can run, climb and do anything. This omission could make it appear that Laura and Almanzo were lazy and unloaded the "dirty jobs" on their little girl.I know children did lots of chorses in those days, but Rose has so many it is almost unbelievable. It is not something that can be explained away because Rose did not have brothers and sisters to help. And with the absence(in the books) of Almanzo being an invalid there is no justification for a little girl having an ususual number of chores. There were so many tasks that Almanzo did not do, but that Rose did instead. Also her work load should have been lightened with Abe and Swiney working on the farm, but it wasn't.

A classic
I read this book as a kid and loved it so I purchased for my 9 year old as we plan to drive to Missouri this spring and visit the Wilders home.

Another good read
If you grew up loving the Little House On the Prairie Books you will love the Rose Wilder years. I get bored reading and looking for different books to read so I read Laura Ingalls Wilders biography. I then reread all of her little house books and didn't realize just how hard times were for them way back then. The show is nothing like the books and I wish the show would have stuck to more like her real life. I then decided to read the Rose years to see how Laura was being a mother to Rose. I am really enjoying reading all of these books, it doesn't take long to read them but I am having fun.

Subsequent house on prairie books after the original ones
My feeling s about these books are the same for all of them. No one seems to come up to Laurs Inglis' original ones They are worth a read but when I got to her grandchildren I gave up I like the older ones much better

Not the original cover
I was disappointed when I received my copy that it wasn't the bright green that the original books were. This is a very dull, dark gray-green. Amazon has added a picture of the new cover, so be aware that's what you'll likely get. The new version is also slightly smaller in size. Despite the changes, I'm pleased this wonderful book is at least still available!
