Great for 1st two months, then had issues w/o resolution.
Back StoryI bought this router April 28, 2020. We had to upgrade our internet from 20 mb to 200mb since my wife was going back to work from maternity leave and her company had moved all their workers from HQ to home. I have setup and wired a few homes so I have a pretty good idea how to setup networking equipment. It took longer to untwist and unknot my previous Netgear's power cable from the surge protector then to get this Nighthawk running. It was fast compared to my previous netgear router. I do see it says upto 35 devices and we normally have something like 20-25 devices connected at once. It ran great and then I opted in for the Armor 30 day trailer. Armor is an awesome service that helps you keep your network secure. It was great, informative and informed me of network exploits. I also love the app for Droid. I can manage my whole network from my phone!1st Problems StartsAfter the Armor service trail was over is when everything went wrong. One day my wife lost connection to the router while working and spent an hour with her IT department trying to figure it out. She restarted the PC, modem, router, and pc again and couldn't connect, so she had to clock out until she was reconnected which didn't happen until after her shift when I was able to trouble shoot. The whole time I was connected via wifi and hardwired with out any issues. As I am trouble shooting it the issue, I move the 4 lan wires around on the back of the router and it fixed the problem. But then we had the issue again the following morning and had to physically switch the ports to get the pc to reconnect. The pc wouldnt show we were connected even though we were hardwired. That evening I called Netgear after getting a case number. After 1 hour and 45 minutes, the call was picked up and I was hung up on. So I called back again on both my personal and work phones to hope that the odds were in my favor of getting through to Netgear. I believe it was at the 35 minute mark I got through to someone on one phone. My case number was 43061215xxx. I told them my issue how I had to physically unplug and change lan ports to get my devices to connect. The Customer Service Rep(CSR) checked my firmware and might have updated(i don't remember if she). My wife's computer would still show it was not connected after a few reboots. So I moved ports and it connected. The CSR said that is normal to physically remove and change ports every day and that since the 90 day tech help was ending and my router was working normal, in Netgear speak. The CSR mentioned I would need a higher level of assistance then what the "free" tech support offers and I could purchase a Netgear service to trouble shoot the problem. Then the CSR did a pretty hard sale for me to subscribe or buy into that yearly assistance program. And insisted on calling me back to have me purchase the plan. I get that stuff goes bad, but I laid out just shy $200 for this router and now everyday we have to disconnect and reconnect all the hardwired devices before we start working. To me, I don't think this how a router is suppose to work, let alone an expensive router. Or a CSR not even willing honor the 1 year warranty listed on their website.2nd ProblemAfter my poor CSR experience, I was already upset. It was maybe the following week my wife started having speed issues which was wierd because she would do a speedtest.net test through our provider and on a 200mb service, she was getting 5-10mb(her IT department verified it was a connection issue on their side). She then would asked to do one to the same location both in a VPN and no VPN and I was coming back with something close to 180mbs. This was with in about 30 sec of the 2 test. And she would run 3rd test and would still be getting 5-10mbs. I even verified that the router was running at 179.xxmbs. the second i moved her cable, she was running the 180-225mbs.3rd ProblemTo make it better in September, the router did a factory reset when we were switching the ports(don't know how this would happen when the reset button is tiny and were were just moving cables around) on its own and I had to take a 1/2 day from work to try and recover the original wifi password and admin login to try and get some of my devices reconnected.ConclusionTo this day of posting 11/27/2020, I still have to change the ports every morning. I mywife will still have speed issues.. Maybe I'll try reaching out again next week. I will be purchasing router soon due to having additional people working from my house/detached garage and I am leaning more towards replacing this nighthawk with a commercial ASUS and buying 1 additional router to use as am access point instead of a Netgear due to this negative experience.**I have always preferred Netgear routers; it was my 1st router I purchased back in 2006 (the little white one with a single antenna and green front lights) and then when that one died in 2015, I purchased another Netgear 344mb router that lasted until March/April this year when the unit would randomly restart or gave me streaming issues.
