Q: Is this good to varnish?

Didn't use varnish on my veneer. I used finishing oil and it was ok

Q: Is the long edge straight? Can I cut it in half and butt the 2 pieces together or will I need to trim them first?

Well it depends if you're going to but them together the edges are very good I found and the glue will stick very nicely too when you do but the edges together you may have to beat the edges to get a perfect fit, hope this helps David

I haven't done anything with it yet as I am currently decorating my house. Once the livingroom is finished I will sort out the nest of tables which needs the veneer replacing on at least one of them.
