Great read - so good I ordered 5 more to give to direct reports
Great book, thank you Tessa for writing this. I bought 5 more copies and likely will buy more to give as gifts. I appreciate the “cliff notes style” of this book, great content and to the point. Countless others are the same message over and over just different analogies or stories of the concept to fill up enough pages to call it a book - they could be distilled down to a single quote and waste your time. If you’ve ever felt like that this is a good book for you.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! A++
I wish I had this book as a young professional. I could have avoided so many mistakes. As I read it, it struck me that what she talks about is so true, but nobody has ever written about something so clearly and honestly that I know of. You can tell that she has been through real life and traveled through her own career journey, and understands what she is talking about. Her insight into how the workplace works is so spot on! She tells great stories that really bring the points home as well with a very unique and fun reading style.I especially loved the 5 Stages of Career Growth. She spends several chapters talking about the skillsets that you need at each stage of your career and how they need to evolve for one to be successful at the next stage. I've never seen anyone else capture it like this and I found it so useful, even as a senior executive who has learned many of the professional lessons the harder way.I also liked her chapters on Promotability and Power---I want every single one of my department members to take in what she outlines as a plan for how to grow your influence in an organization. It is actionable with great checklists and case studies and even scripts to draw upon to guide you through.Great read for anyone working through a career--but especially relevant for Directors and below.

Read it and bought it for my college kids too!
I loved the tricks for talking about conflict at work. It helped me address some problems with my manager and it went better than I expected.I was trying to decide if I was going to stay or go. I wanted to change jobs and I read the chapter on “Should I Stay or Should I Go” and chose to work through my problems and reinvent myself. She helped me see all of the options in a new light.This is a perfect book for my college kids to enter the workforce.This book is easy to read because it is not a one time read through book, it is a pick your chapter that applies to you and run with it!

Worth > 1000x The Purchase Price
I’m not an avid reader so I appreciate the conversational approach the author takes—for me it really helped to keep me engaged and made the read far more enjoyable than your typical professional development book. Parts of it will piss you off as you discover how unjust corporate America is, but it’s sadly (most times) accurate I think. This “behind the scenes” insight provides invaluable access to better help you navigate your career and coach you through sensitive and uncomfortable pay and career discussions with your management; helping you get more of what you want and deserve from your employer. Five stars. Don’t just read it. Study it, reference it, apply it, and count your way to your 1000x payback and beyond.

Solid career advice for workers and managers.
A lot of the information in covered in this book. Much of it was over my head as I am not a manager of employees. But it is filled with good information for managers and workers alike. The book is written from a managers point of view. Tessa White, the author gives advice to workers on what to do if you want to climb the ladder of success. She also gives managers advice on how to select employees who are capable of climbing the ladder of success.There’s a ton of information in here that can help anyone who works, particularly in a corporate environment.She shares firsthand stories of her career and how she saw different problems and solve them. Very interesting stuff. As I read it, I had a few aha moments which helped me understand my work environment a little more.I get the feeling that Tessa White definitely understands people, and she is passionate for what she does. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to climb higher in the workplace.

bought it for my mom
So I bought this book for my mom who's been struggling with an employer who doesn't appreciate all she brings to the table and makes here jump through unnecessary hoops. My mother has been with the company for 10+ years and she was just frankly getting burnt out. She asked me for a book on how she could push her career forward and find a way to communicate more effectively with her boss. After reading just the first half of the book, my mom called me to tell me how much she LOVED this book and how it's already making a difference in her life. She loves it so much she's giving it to my sister next so my sister can make sure she's also not being taken advantage of any longer in her workplace. A big thank you to the author!

Boy, do I wish I'd had this book 20 years ago!
No matter what stage you are in your career, this book will enlighten, empower, and equip you to navigate the sometimes rough terrain that is the modern workplace.White calls it like she sees it, imploring readers to take ownership of their professional development but hands over the tools to make it happen. She includes personal stories and anecdotes, case studies, worksheets, and mini-assignments with real life examples of how to negotiate pay, understand corporate politics, diffuse conflicts, and more.Written with authenticity and a refreshingly honest voice, this book is one of the best investments you could make in yourself and your career.

Essential career advice
Don't learn the hard way. Office politics, challenging managers, frustrating employees, unmet expectations and hazy performance reviews plague all of us. Let this book be your guide.Great for those brand new to the workplace, those a few years in, and even (maybe especially) senior leaders.
