Distributed Systems: Principles and Paradigms

Excellent book, covers a large number of topics related to distributed systems and computer science in general. Explains the concepts clearly and in a an easy to read fashion. This is useful to learn the theory behind distributed systems. Advanced users may however find that they already know most of what the book covers.

Fantastic book. I have a MS in Computer Science and I'm sure if I picked this book up again I would learn something new on my second time through. Read it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion; and some of the more negative remarks on this book are without warrant. The book starts as an exposition into distributed computing and branches into a comprehensive 'overview' of both theory and technical implementations. If you're looking for a book that is specific to one particular region of distributed technology this isn't it. If you've a computer science background you should appreciate the work Tannenbaum and Steen put into this book. It's a great book for academia and reference by information technology professionals who desire to understand the fundamentals of distributed computing. But as some comments have alluded, this is book is but the beginning. As a final note, the material is well referenced so you can branch of into the published works of others as needed.

I received my ordered textbook exactly one week after the seller sent me the notification.Very efficient work and the book arrived in good shape.

In the entirety of my college career, this is easily the most poorly written book I've ever seen.The author bounces from topic to topic without warning, even within chapters, from paragraph to paragraph. He spends most of his time explaining the many problems with Distributed Systems, and only touches on potential solutions, sometimes. He likes to throw in high vocabulary for no other reason than to try and justify his great intelligence. There are no review questions for the chapters, so it's difficult to understand the point he is trying to make, or what the reader should have understood.The book is so bad that it had to be self-published, that should be all you need to make a decision. Pick a different book/author. I'm stupider for having read this book, and it's time I'll never get back in my life.

Gives an excellent overview of the key set of issues that the design/implementation of a distributed system involves. Language is broad and easy to understand, and should give most competent engineers a good insight into the field. Despite some technical examples given, they're really quite broad and as such this shouldn't be considered a guide to implementing a system so much as a guide to the mechanisms behind them.It is also worth noting that this is a printed version of the freely available eBook, so unless you want a bound copy for notes/doodling and such (as I did) it may not be worth paying for it. Overall it's a great book for the theory, but not a technical manual. Recommended for students, as this is widely used in academia (taught postgraduate especially) for examples and course material, so you'll be getting a leg up on the material this way.
