Perfect for basement/ playroom/ entertainment area
I wanted a big chess set for outside, and I planned to paint a checker board right on our deck. But the larger size I really wanted (that we had seen at a resort and played every day) was just too much money so I decided this size would work. The problem? My son loves this chess set so much, he wants to keep it in the house. It's about the same size as a Twister mat and completely fills the middle of his playroom. (We don't have a basement.) The nylon "board" is nicer than expected, but it does seems more suited for a flat indoor floor. The pieces are very sturdy, good quality. They would take up a lot of space if you wanted to store them so ideally find a place to set it up-- and leave it there. A large bonus room/ playroom/ downstairs entertainment area, or patio/poolside is ideal for this size. The optimum square size is 7-8" (if you want to make your own board, like a garden set-up with pavers.) I will say, the large set is a great novelty. When my son has friends come over, they all want to play chess first now instead of automatically heading for video games, and he has taught many of them how to play. That alone warrants 5 stars!

EXPENSIVE !
The product is useful and what we needed but it was very expensive for the quality that we received.

Fun, not too huge
Fun, not too huge, stable and value for money. Hope the mat lasts, just nylon squares sewn together. Too soon to see if the white stays white in the sunshine, but even if it slightly yellows, it will be more like ivory so no concerns there. Quite solid and stable.

Way overpriced, but they look good
Considering these pieces are simply injection-molded plastic, the price seems way out of line. And there's no way you could use them outside in any kind of breeze because they'd blow right over. I haven't used the "chessboard" that came with them because it's simply a sheet of cheap plastic. Spreading it out on a lawn and expecting the pieces not to fall over would be folly.I solved the problem by laboriously cutting out the bottom of every piece (with a Dremel), filling them mostly with expandable foam, and then topping the last three inches off with Plaster of Paris. Then I installed green felt on all of them.So now the set feels a lot more substantial, but the pieces are not so heavy as to be unpleasant. It's a real chess set now, not simply a novelty toy.
