What a beautiful board/box. To begin with, it's not just rosewood, it's Brazilian rosewood, and the wavy grain is outstanding. The two halves were constructed with single pieces ofsolid rosewood that were then sawn apart using a thin-kerf blade, resulting in continuously matched grain on each edge when the board is closed and latched. All of the corners are expertly glued tongue-and-groove design with nary a holliday gap to be found on my set. The magnets are more than strong enough for their particular application. If two men get stuck together, it requires a relatively hefty tug to separate them. I can see two reasons why someone might think the magnets are weak: First, the board is highly non-silicone polished, making it slick. Second, the rosewood and maple marquetry squares are nearly three millimeters thick, a relatively tough haul for a tiny magnet.A much lighter (boxwood? birch?) purfling strip surrounds the playing surface, separating the dark rosewood squares from the dark rosewood border, making the distinction between playing surface and non-board areas clear. I was pleasantly surprised to find the same craftsmanship that I would expect to see in a high-end acoustical guitar being used on a 10-inch portable chess set. And for a bit less than $35.As for the men? Solid wood, and no paint. The rosewood pieces are considerably darker than rosewood board squares, so they are easy to see during play. The white men also contrast nicely with the white squares; apparently being made of the same wood as the light purfle around the board.I would definitely recommend this set to any chess player, and I am going to order three more sets to give to my grandchildren. I'm sure they will enjoy having them to play on when they are away at school.

I am very pleased with the quality of this chess set, particularly in regards to the price. Some of the magnets are weaker than others, but overall, it's an excellent set for using with children - the set can be moved without jarring the pieces, and the pieces are less likely to get knocked over by kids who haven't yet gained fine motor skills (or klutzy parents, for that matter). It's about the size of a hardcover book, so it might be a bit big for airplane travel for anyone but the most serious chess player, but it would be great for, say, a road trip.

I am overall very happy with this product. It is the perfect size. I am a student at Wayne State University and it isn't too big to carry around in my backpack and not too small where it's uncomfortable/tedious to play. The quality of the wood on the board and pieces are nice. My only complaint and why it didn't get 5 stars is because a couple of the pieces have magnets that are really weak and can barely be considered magnetic and will still slide around if the board is tilted slightly. It was one of the main reasons I picked this board besides the awesome reviews it got.

Great little chess board. I've take it traveling with us and played on it in an airplane, outdoor restaurant watching the sun set....don't slide it across a rough surface...it will get scratched.

Good chess set. The pieces are very small, as is the board. If that is fine with you, then this is a good chess set for portability.

This is a beautiful set; very well made. My husband loved it and it is small enough for him to take on trips to our grandkids so they can play him.

The person for whom the gift was intended "found" two chess sets in his basement the day after I ordered this set. I was tempted to send it back when it arrived, but once I opened it, I was taken by the quality and the portability of the set. I am keeping it for a future gift. It's lovely.

Purchased for my 8 yr old son. An attractive, small, but not too small set. Originally, one of the white pawns had a very weak magnet in it and really didn't stick to the board. Customer service was extremely apologetic and bent over backwards to make sure we ended up with a fully functional set. Based on my experience, I would recommend this set or any purchase from AB Handicrafts as they certainly stand behind their product.

Se cercate una scacchiera portatile o per studio di dimensioni contenute, non esitate: non troverete di meglio.Cercavo una scacchiera in legno (le plastiche non mi piacciono molto) da poggiare su un tavolo, su un divano o semplicemente sulle ginocchia mantre studio le partite e la teoria, senza dover ricorrere alla regolamentare 50x50 con i pezzi da 5-9 cm. Ho cercato a lungo esitando molto. Questa è perfetta ed è anche magnetica. Il prezzo chiude il cerchio.Consigliatissima

Prodotto di ottima fattura, molto bello e, oltretutto magnetico (cosa che non avevo notato quando ho scelto di prenderlo). Al confronto con degli scacchi in plastica precedentemente acquistati (a poco meno della metà del prezzo e subito resi perché danneggiati) direi che non c'è paragone! Unica pecca (a voler essere puntigliosi) 2 o 3 pedoni bianchi risultano macchiati di verde a causa del rivestimento interno che copre la sede in cui vengono riposti, ma probabilmente riuscirò a "smacchiarli" con qualche prodotto idoneo. Nulla di grave, a mio avviso. Acquisto consigliato.

Quiero decir que el magnetismo no es demasiado fuerte y el tablero tiene que estar siempre en horizontal.
