Love this movie! It's only flaws are misinformation about parrots.
Let me star by saying-- this is one of my favorite movies. But it could have been better. It feel just sort of the five star mark for me because of the below reasons that kill the immersion for me and perpetuate the problems of gross misinformation about parrots. We see movies do it all the time: people feed animals food that in real life would outright kill them or make them very very sick, or house them in places they should not live.Rio is, unfortunately, no better in that regard. It does a wonderful job in the actual story itself, and forgot animation, but in a world where parrots are already treated to such abuse and neglect or are mistreated by well-meaning but clueless people...I really wish this film had done better correcting some minor-yet major flaws.Parrots do not drink hot chocolate. It will make them sick if not kill them.Parrots do not eat chocolate chip cookies. The same as above.Parrots should not eat seed out of someone's mouth because the bacteria in the body fluids of mammals can be very deadly to parrots. At best, it can make them sick Also, it's not good hygiene for the people, either.A trained parrot sanctuary isn't going to just up and throw a brand new bird in with another bird even na large aviary space, and say "good luck" like we see here in Rio with Blu and Jewel. They are going to carefully introduce them at the birds' pace, with some form of barrier between them, to avoid fighting and subsequent injury and stress to either bird. They also wouldn't just abandon them for "privacy" in a first meeting, as you see in the movie when Jewel begins harassing and attacking Blu repeatedly! For that exact reason, they would be supervising!! It was funny for the story, but could have been written so much better and get the same effect with a little forethought.A ceiling fan would not be turned on in a clinic for birds let alone letting them ride on it! Preferably, they remove the blades or replace the fixture all-together. Ceiling fans are responsible for killing many parrots who flew into them and got nailed.A bird does not fly on ONLY instinct. It's not some magical superpower all flighted birds possess regardless of life experience. Blu's glorious first flight is touching for the story, but continues to misrepresent to the every day person how much goes into a bird taking flight. In short, physically, he wouldn't have been able to do it. Not remotely that far, anyhow.Blu should have had to spend time building muscle in his useless, un-excercised wings to even be able to sustain flight longer than a few seconds. Then Congress actually taking off, and landing on different surfaces.Taking off and flying up is instinct. Flying down must be trained. Turning in the air, is a skill that reason and learn. Bring able to control speed, etc.The cockatoo, Nigel, would be a very sick and dying parrot if his real diet was actually just meat. Parrots are not carnivores. They may nibble a bug or meat off of their humans plate now and then, but too much meat can and will make them very ill.For a movie specially designed to educate people about the plight of parrots while being a fun kids movie, as much as I live this film, I'm very annoyed and disappointed they chose to blatantly promote such clueless information about parrots. It's almost embarrassing for a film dedicated to them. This movie does a lot to highlight very real issues of parrot poaching and abuse

Rio is fab. My wife has even turned the film into a theme for her year 2 class. They all loved it too and many of the children asked for the film for their birthdays or Christmas. A lovely story, great animation, fantastic music - we had to download the MP3 to sing along to in the car. Also, we bought it for our grandparents - they loved it too.A great film for all ages.

Rio
