The mystery is in the book itself, not in the novel
I liked the first novel of the Alex Kovacs series from the beginning.. "Vienna at Nightfall" was a well-written novel with an interestingly complex plot combining a murder mystery and the story of recruiting a spy . In the second novel," The Spies of Zurich," the mystery involves discovering who is betraying the spies of Zurich to the Gestapo. The intrigue and a few plot twists also made this novel a good mystery. The third novel,"The Lyon Resistance," as the title implies, is a thriller, not a mystery. This novel's strength lies in examining the complexity of the choices the characters face in the convoluted situations in which they find themselves. "The Lyon Resistance" is a not mystery : it goes in a different direction , resulting in an interesting novel and worthy continuation of the series. Spoiler alert: there is a cliff-hanger at the end of this well-written novel. The mystery is not in the novel but in the book itself. I ordered this novel on Feb. 9,2020 and received it a few days later. As I was enjoying reading about Alex worrying about who might have betrayed him to the Gestapo,I turned to page 136 and saw on the facing page " 'You're a Beautiful Beast' It all starts with YOU! Author : Anthony W.L. Johnson. " [ See photos of several pages from the book ] Right in the middle of the novel were 16 poorly printed pages containing the copyrighted writings by Mr. Johnson ! The last photo shows the date Mr. Johnson's work was printed ( Feb. 9, 2020 ) and on the facing page the continuation of "The Lyon Resistance."I understand "on-demand publishing," but it is a mystery to me how 16 pages from a "motivational guide for entrepreneurial success & personal growth" could suddenly appear in the middle of a novel !Has anyone else experienced similar problems with "on-demand publishers?"

Enjoyable read but…
A small mater, but why are all these Europeans using the imperial system of measurement. The metric system was adopted as the standard in Europe long before WWII. The devil is in the details. Otherwise a great ride.

Attaboy, Mr Wake!
Well I nattered about the writing in the previous book, the one in Zurich. The author seems to have upped his game now. Well written, good tension in the story, and the whole effort evokes the terrible situation that existed in France.I'll be continuing on with the series.

It was a good read but.....
I've just finished reading The Lyon Resistance. It is a good story well told and I congratulate the author on it. I mean that sincerely but I see one defect in his writing: The frequent and unnecessary use of the F bomb and many of its derivatives. I read the book on my kindle and therefore was easily able to count that the F Bomb was used 108 times in the book from page 4 through page 258. I didn't bother counting the use of its derivatives b ujt they were excessive.I'm not a prude and readily understand that the use foul language can be useful but as it is used in this book it adds nothing to what is written nor to the action. In addition, because it adds nothing to the story or the character development, it is annoying to the reader.I note that Alan Furst, Michael Connolly, the late Vince Flynn and so many others have no need of that word and have been extremely successful authors of fiction. That said, I look forward to the next installment of Alex Kovacs, your reluctant hero.Tom Finnerty, Boston, MA

So good, again!
I will be going on to book 4. This is very exciting and so interesting. Alex is on the run, using safe houses and disguises. It is fascinating how he lives, how they live. Manon is as much a hero as Alex.

Excellent Read
If you are looking for good pacy stories that have been well researched and are good at creating the atmosphere of the times they are describing include Richard Wake's series on Alex Kovacs in your reading list. Mr Wake has clearly walked the streets of Vienna, Lyon and Limoges and brings a real sense of authenticity to his scenarios. If he has not walked the street he is an excellent armchair traveller. Similar to Alan Furst but with less sex!

Great Story.
I love this series and the hero. Hope Manon is not dead. The story held together well, and the next book has been lined up beautifully. Recommend this book if you like spy stories set in the Second World War.

Another goodie in the series
I have enjoyed the Alex Kovacs series. This book had a decent plot and the recurring characters are becoming old friends. The surprise ending of Book 3 has brought out a nastier element in Alex but that may be truer to himself in the circumstances. I will read volumes 5 & 6 as the series is a “good read”

The book is a lighthearted look at a very dark era
Easy to read, entertaining in spite of the subject.
